Long-term in situ measurements of NOx and NOy at Jungfraujoch 1998–2009: time series analysis and evaluation

چکیده

We present an analysis of the NOy (NOx + other oxidized species) measurements at the high alpine site Jungfraujoch (JFJ, 3580 m a.s.l.) for the period 1998–2009, which is the longest continous NOy data set reported from the lower free troposphere worldwide. Due to stringent emission control regulations, nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions have been reduced significantly in Europe since the late 1980s as well as during the investigation period. However, the time series of NOy at JFJ does not show a consistent trend but a maximum during 2002 to 2004 and a decreasing tendency thereafter. The seasonal cycle of NOy exhibits a maximum in the warm season and a minimum in the cold months, opposite to measurements in the PBL, reflecting the seasonal changes in vertical transport and mixing. Except for summer, the seasonal mean NOx concentrations at JFJ show a high year-toyear variability which is strongly controlled by short episodic pollution events obscuring any long-term trends. The low variability in mean and median NOx values in summer is quite remarkable indicating rapid photochemical conversion of NOx to higher oxidized species (NOz) of the NOy family on a timescale shorter than the time required to transport polluted air from the boundary layer to JFJ. In order to evaluate the quality of the NOy data series, an in-situ intercomparison with a second collocated NOy analyzer with a separate inlet was performed in 2009–2010 which showed an overall agreement within 10 % including all uncertainties and errors.

Seasonal variability of measured ozone production efficiencies in the lower free troposphere of Central Europe

In this study we present the seasonal variability of ozone production efficiencies (EN ), defined as the net number of ozone molecules produced per molecule of nitrogen oxides (nitrogen oxide (NO) + nitrogen dioxide (NO2)=NOx) oxidized to NOz (total reactive nitrogen (NOy)–NOx) determined from field measurements of a seven-year period (1998–2004) at the Swiss high-alpine research station Jungfr...

Dynamic Harmonic Analysis of Long Term over Voltages Based on Time Varying Fourier series in Extended Harmonic Domain

Harmonics have become an important issue in modern power systems. The widespread penetration of non-linear loads to emerging power systems has turned power quality analysis into an important operation issue under both steady state and transient conditions. This paper employs an Extended Harmonic Domain (EHD) based framework for dynamic analysis of long term analysis over voltages during the tra...

Measurements of HONO, NO, NOy and SO2 in aircraft exhaust plumes at cruise

[1] Measurements of gaseous nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions in young aircraft exhaust plumes give insight into chemical oxidation processes inside aircraft engines. Particularly, the OH‐induced formation of nitrous acid (HONO) from nitrogen oxide (NO) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) from sulfur dioxide (SO2) inside the turbine which is highly uncertain, need detailed analysis to address the clima...

Wavelet analysis of GRACE K-band range rate measurements related to Urmia Basin

Space-borne gravity data from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), as well as some other in situ and remotely sensed satellite data have been used to determine water storage changes in Lake Urmia Basin (Iran). As usual, the GRACE products are derived from precise inter-satellite range rate measurements converted to different formats such as spherical harmonic coefficients and equiva...

Evaluating the Relation Between Ozone, NOx and Hydrocarbons: The Method of Photochemical Indicators

The method of photochemical indicators is a way to evaluate the sensitivity of O3 to its two main precursors, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and reactive organic gases (ROG), directly from ambient measurements. The method is based on identifying measureable species or species ratios that are closely associated with O3-NOx-ROG predictions in photochemical models. Several species of this type have been id...
